The Met Office has updated the yellow weather warning for wind, issued earlier in the week.

  • Warning time is now from midnight Wednesday/Thursday to 9pm on Thursday
  • Warning covers a large part of the UK, including all of the Scottish Borders
  • Gusts of up to 55mph expected widely
  • Chance of gusts of 65-70mph in coastal areas, on high ground and areas to south and east of high ground
  • Be prepared for high winds
  • More information

Strong west to north-westerly winds will develop in the west during Wednesday evening and these will continue to strengthen and move south-eastwards over a large part of the UK on Wednesday night and through Thursday.

Widespread gusts to 45-55mph are expected across all parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, north Wales and down to the Midlands, with a chance of gusts to 65-70mph in coastal areas, high ground and areas to south and east of high ground.

The strongest gusts of 70-80mph are likely over the far north and north-east of Scotland, including the Northern Isles, for a time during Thursday morning.

Wind speeds will reduce on Friday, but it will remain a windy day across most of the country.

See the Met Office website for more details.
