Risk of flooding

Residents are asked to be vigilant due to the risk of some river flooding today.

A yellow weather warning for rain has been in place since 3am and runs until 6pm this evening. This covers western areas of the Scottish Borders, including Peebles, Hawick, Selkirk and Newcastleton.

Up to 40mm of rain is forecast, with up to 80mm over higher ground. The rainfall is expected to clear to the east during the early evening.

A SEPA flood alert is in place for the whole of the Scottish Borders, with a flood warning in place for Drumelzier to Dawyck. Further flood warnings may be issued.

Flood gates have been closed in various locations as required, including in Hawick and Jedburgh.

The main areas of concern are currently Jedburgh and Cuddyside in Peebles, with rivers due to peak through the afternoon.

If you are travelling by car, please drive to the conditions. There may be significant surface water flooding in places and drivers should slow down to minimise the risk of an incident and to avoid creating issues for any adjacent properties.
