Increased wind speeds forecast as amber warning for wind updated


The Met Office has updated the amber weather warning for wind which comes into effect at 6pm this evening (Sunday).

This now warns of winds potentially peaking at around 90mph in exposed coastal and hilly areas.

The end time of the warning has also been brought forward.

Key information:

  • Warning in place from 6pm Sunday to 6am Monday
  • Warning area covers the whole of the Scottish Borders
  • Winds increasing into the evening and overnight
  • Gusts of up to 70mph expected widely inland, with up to 80mph around coasts
  • Peak gusts of around 90mph possible in exposed coastal and hilly areas
  • SEPA has issued flood warnings for a number of local rivers
  • Damage to buildings and homes is possible, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down
  • Roads, bridges and railway lines may close, with delays and cancellations to transport services
  • Power cuts could occur and affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Flying debris could result in a danger to life
  • There is potential for large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
  • Other warnings:

    An underlying yellow weather warning for wind came into effect at 12noon today and runs until 12noon on Monday.

    A yellow weather warning for rain which did cover some western parts of the area has been updated and now no longer covers any part of the region. Please note however that SEPA has issued a flood alert and a number of flood warnings already.
