The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms which runs throughout Friday.

Key information

Warning timing: from midnight tonight (Thursday) to 11.59pm on Friday

Warning area: whole of the Scottish Borders

20–30mm of rain possible in 1 hour

30–50mm of rain possible in 3 hours

Risk of surface water flooding

Frequent lightning, large hail (2–4cm) and locally strong wind gusts

Potential travel disruption with flash flooding on roads

Be prepared for rain and flooding

Spells of heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to become more widespread during Friday morning, with further thunderstorms and heavy rain possible through the afternoon before conditions gradually improve later in the day.

Rainfall amounts will vary considerably across the area.
