Alert message sent 24/08/2020 11:17:00

Information sent on behalf of Scottish Borders Council

Good morning Citizen

The Met Office have just announced that Storm Francis will affect much of the UK tomorrow. They have just issued a Yellow be aware warning for Rain for the Scottish Borders valid from Midnight tonight until 6am on Wednesday morning.

The South East of Scotland will see heavy rain from about 6am tomorrow morning continuing all day with up to 40mm (about 1.5 inches) of rain possible. That means we can expect significant surface water on our roads and some potential for flooding in small watercourses the risk ok river flooding is considered low. The rain will be accompanied by unseasonal strong winds and with trees in full leaf we may see some disruption to travel etc.

SEPA have also issued a general Flood Alert for the Scottish Borders and they say; Particularly at risk are flood prone urban areas and the transport network. Impacts may include flooding to low-lying land and roads, with difficult driving conditions. Individual properties may also be at risk.

They have also highlighted the potential for some large waves on the east coast tomorrow so at high tide we may see some wave overtopping and as a consequence we are closing access to the Bantry at Eyemouth tomorrow.

For more detailed information on the various warnings please see the Met Office and SEPA websites.

Updates on any travel disruption tomorrow can be found on the SBC website and Social Media channels and local radio.
